Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been ruled out of New Zealand T20Is after suffering a fracture in his right thumb during Sunday morning’s practice session. He was taken to a local hospital that confirmed a fracture. Babar Azam is expected to be fit for the Test series that begins on Boxing Day at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The T20I series begins on 18 December in Auckland and runs till 22 December.

Shadab Khan will lead the side in the absence of Regular skipper, the vice-captain Babar Azam will step in to leadthe side. However, Shadab himself is being monitored as he carries a groin niggle. His availability for the firstgame in Auckland will be assessed close to the match. Shadab had missed the series against Zimbabwe at home with a similar injury.

Kane Williamson and Trent Boult, who had been rested for the West Indies series, have been named in New Zealand’s twnety20 squad for their upcoming T20Is series against Pakistan while Ross Taylor misses out from the team. Williamson and Boult, along with Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson and Daryl Mitchell will only be available for the second and third T20Is. Mitchell Santner will serve as the stand-in skipper for the first T20I, which begins in Auckland on 18 December.

Glenn Phillips and Devon Conway has been retained. Phillips and Conway were involved in a record 181-run stand for the third wicket in the second T20I against West Indies. Glenn Phillips is named the Player of the Match after a stellar show in the second againt West Indies T20. Lockie Ferguson and Hamish Bennett have been ruled out with injuries. Speedster Lockie Ferguson withdrawn from the squad after scans revealed a bones stress injury of his lumbar spine. Hamish Bennett has also been ruled out with an abdominal tear. Fast bowler Jacob Duffy has earned his maiden call-up and will be available for the first match. Blair Tickner, Mark Chapman and Doug Bracewell have been included for the opening game as well. Ish Sodhi and Todd Astle will form the spin trio along with Santer.
