Kane Williamson named ODI cricketer of the year by NZC
Skipper Kane Williamson’s noted Cricket World Cup performance and the way he led to the kiwis to the final of the Cricket World Cup 2019. I think everyone still remembers, one of the best final ever played, one of many reasons he named New Zealand men’s one-day international cricketer of the year on Thursday (April 30) at the annual award function.
The Black Caps skipper also named player of the tournament at last year’s global showpiece led a parade of big names on day three of New Zealand Cricket’s annual awards with Ross Taylor, Suzie Bates, and Sophie Devine also collecting silverware.
Star women player Suzie Bates won women’s ODI player of the year while Ross Taylor and White Ferns captain Sophie Devine was awarded the respectively T20 international player of the year. White Ferns captain Sophie Devine won the women’s Twenty20 (T20) international player award for the third consecutive year, while veteran Ross Taylor was named men’s T20 player of the year.
Kane Williamson was outstanding for the Black Caps in England, he scored 578 runs at an average of 82.57 including match-winning centuries against South Africa and West Indies. Kane Williamson was also named in the ICC’s world ODI team of 2019.
Recently, New Zealand cricket’s (NZC) middle-order batsman scored 360 runs in the white-ball series against India. Overall in T20s at the international level, Taylor has featured in 101 T20 International (T20I) games and scores 1961 runs with eight half-centuries.
Suzie Bates featured in 124 one-day international (ODI) for White Ferns, she has scored 4534 runs with 10 centuries and 27 fifties. She is the highest run-scorer for New Zealand and sixth amongst overall ODI records. Skipper Devine has scored 2384 runs in 91 T20I games for White ferns.
Black Caps coach Gary said:
Kane was simply exceptional at the ICC Cricket World Cup last year. He can be extremely proud of what he achieved at the tournament in the UK. He scored his runs at crucial times, in crucial matches and he set a tempo throughout the tournament that allowed us to play some superb cricket.
White Ferns coach Bob Carter said:
Our T20 side is at its best when Sophie is scoring runs at the top. She gives others around her the freedom to play their natural game, Sophie’s ability with the ball in T20 cricket goes under the radar at times. She will often step up and bowl the hard overs and uses changes of pace to her advantage. She is a top quality all-rounder and an exceptional T20 talent.
The New Zealand Cricket’s (NZC) awards conclude on Friday with the announcement of the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for the player of the year, with Williamson and Tim Southee the top contenders after unforgettable performances in ODI and test cricket respectively.
