Sri Lanka, currently ranked ninth in the ICC rankings, have recently returned from a bad tour of England losing all three T20Is and coming off second best 2-0 in the three-match ODI series. The misery for the home side continues as they start this series with the overall head to head records standing at 56-91 and having beaten India just once in their last nine encounters (L8).
Sri Lanka cricket team are second to bottom with only one victory in nine matches and would be aiming to improve their standings on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League points table.
With many of the regular Indian ODI team players presently touring England for test series, former India captain and now head coach Rahul Dravid brings a second string squad to Sri Lanka which offers up opportunities for six potential youngsters debutants – including RCB opener Devdutt Padikkal who scored 195 across six IPL matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore this year. Shikhar Dhawan, who needs 23 more ODI runs to become just the tenth Indian batsman to reach the 6,000 run milestone, will lead the side while Pacer B Kumar will be his deputy on this tour.
India, ranked fourth but ninth on the Super League table, come into this series having beaten England 2-1 at home after losing two consecutive away series against Australia (1-2) and New Zealand (0-3). Dravid can take some comfort from India’s recent ODI record without regular captain Virat Kohli in the XI, whilst as a whole the ODI team have won 14 of their last 16 ODIs against teams currently ranked beneath them (fifth or lower).
Four of the last five ODIs at the RPS stadium have been won by the team to bat first. The average first innings score across the last ten ODIs at the RPS is 285, or 323 for teams who bat first and win. Sri Lanka have posted the highest opening partnership in nine of their last 12 home ODIs. India own the record for highest ODI team score at the RPS, when amassing 375/5 against Sri Lanka in a 2017 tour.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar (India pacer): “It’s been good (working with Dravid). We spent 14 days in quarantine in Mumbai. After seven days, we were out in the gym. He’s kept things very simple. There are young guys, there are senior guys. Everyone is listening to him. It’s been a good experience. Once the matches come, there will be planning and we’ll get to learn more from him.”
